Frequently Asked Questions
Laser Hair Removal (Elite MPX Laser System)
If you are contemplating getting laser hair removal treatments with the latest, state-of-the-art technology, then we encourage you to continue reading to learn more about the process itself and the Elite MPX Laser – the gold standard when it comes to lasers. At Boston Cosmetic Surgery Center, we strive to stay abreast of the latest and greatest instruments on the market, and the Elite MPX laser system holds up the highest standards. Should you choose to undergo laser hair removal treatments with the new Elite MPX laser system, we are confident that we can customize your treatment and provide you with outstanding results that will leave your skin smoother and silkier than ever before.
How does the Elite MPX remove hair?
The Elite MPX shoots a beam of light energy, which is then absorbed by the blood vessels, the melanin and the pigmentation of the hair follicle. When the light is absorbed by the follicle, it converts to heat and the heat destroys the follicle. Once the hair follicle is destroyed, it can no longer re-grow hair. Because the laser's sequential wavelengths can be carefully adjusted, the surrounding tissues around the hair follicle are intact, thus leaving the skin touchably soft.
Hair follicles go through a transition of both active and dormant stages. During your treatment, we will cover the entire skin's surface; however, only the active follicles will be impacted by the treatment. When the follicle is in its dormant stage, it won't absorb the light from the laser; therefore, it will take multiple treatments to ensure that each and every hair is properly treated, especially since only about 30 to 50% of your hair is actively growing at any given time.
Why do you use the Elite MPX?
Boston Cosmetic Surgery Center uses the Elite MPX laser because it's the most advanced laser used for hair removal on the market, and anywhere in the world. The Elite MPX is powered by the MultiPlex technology that sequentially fires the ND:YAG and the Alexandrite wavelengths through the same hand-held device, all with precision timing. This dual-wavelength technology uses precise timing, improves efficiency and comfort, and is safer than earlier generations of single-wavelength lasers. Not only is the Elite MPX the most versatile platform on the market, it can remove hair on virtually all skin types, and it can also treat wrinkles, sun-damaged skin, redness, brown spots, facial and leg veins, and integrated IPL for photofacials.
Why is the Elite MPX Laser better than others on the market?
The MultiPlex has proven to be more effective on both hair removal treatments and vascular treatments than single wavelength lasers. Since the MultiPlex uses not one, but two wavelengths sequentially, each wavelength can be adjusted to provide a more precise, and comfortable treatment. For lighter skin types the most effective wavelength is the 755 nm Alexandrite wavelength and for darker skin, the most effective wavelength is the 1064 nm or Nd:YAG laser.
What are the benefits of getting laser hair removal?
You will experience smoother skin.
There won't be any ingrown hairs.
It saves you time shaving.
Over time it saves you money on temporary removal methods.
You don't have to worry about the appearance of unwanted hair.
It will enhance your appearance and your confidence.
It's faster and less painful than getting electrolysis.
Will laser hair removal be painful?
It's normal to experience a slight prickly or stinging sensation when being treated with the Elite MPX Laser. As in any hair removal method, everyone has a different reaction and a different level of pain and discomfort; it all depends upon your own sensitivity and level of tolerance. We do everything we can to minimize any discomfort by applying numbing creams and ice packs during the procedure; we find that most of our clients tolerate the treatments quite well.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Yes, it is. The majority of our clients can reasonably expect from 70 to 90% permanent hair reduction. Laser hair removal is not as effective on the lighter hair colors such as red, blond, and gray and hormonal changes can cause the hair to grow back. If this occurs, we may need to touch up the area or maintenance treatment may be necessary.
What areas can be treated?
With the larger 18mm spot size, we can treat any area of a man or a woman's body, thus covering as many body areas as you so desire. Women typically treat the upper lip, the underarms, the bikini line, and the legs. Men typically get laser hair removal on the back of their neck, their back, chest and abdomen.
What are the side effects?
The side effects are uncommon and when they do occur they are temporary, they may include: redness, swelling, itching, mild to moderate burns or blisters, bruising, and hypopigmentation (loss of pigmentation), or hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin). We tell our patients the best way to maximize their results is to avoid sun exposure for the two weeks before treatment and two weeks following treatment. Also, clients who are pregnant should know that hormonal changes can affect the results of laser treatments.
How long does a single treatment take?
Treatment sessions don't take long at all, each body area can be completed in 30 minutes or less. We take special care to ensure that your treatment is completed as comfortably and efficiently as possible. Since laser hair removal sessions are brief, it's easy to carve time out of your busy schedule and there is virtually no downtime. You can return to your normal activities right away.
What will my skin look like in between sessions?
During treatment, the area will be cleared of the majority of visible hair. The remaining treated hair will shed on its own within around two weeks after the treatment. The area should remain smooth and clear for 4 to 6 weeks after the treatment. By repeating your sessions according to the schedule, you can expect the area to remain free of hair and completely smooth throughout your multiple sessions.
Am I a candidate for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal treatment is less effective on people with blond, red, or gray hair. If you are naturally light haired, then electrolysis would be your best alternative. Otherwise, you can expect to see fantastic results after your first treatment. You will have fewer hairs and they will be finer, and you can enjoy smoother skin immediately and your pores won't be as visible. With each subsequent session, the results will be even more remarkable than before.
How many treatments will be necessary to achieve my desired results?
The exact number of treatments will depend upon the coarseness of the hair, the stage of growth, the area of the body being treated, and the skin and hair color, which all vary from person to person. On average, our clients can reasonably expect from 70 to 90% hair reduction in a series of 8 to 12 treatments. We generally recommend a client gets 4 to 8 treatments with 4 to 6 weeks in between treatments.
What are the risks?
In the minutes and hours immediately following your treatments, you may experience slight redness and swelling around the hair follicles, this is completely normal and a sign that the treatment area has responded well to the treatments. This slight redness or "goose bump" like effect is only temporary and will subside within 12 to 48 hours.
How much does laser hair removal cost?
Most people do need at least 4 sessions, and while our single treatment prices are competitively priced, we take into account that most people need multiple sessions and gladly offer special package deals. We also offer a free consultation where we can discuss your treatment options as well as your goals and expectations.
What can the Elite MPX laser system do?
The Elite MPX laser system does far more than just remove hair, it can be safely used on all skin types to effectively remove hair, pigmentation, spider veins, to reduce redness, and general dyschromia (alteration of skin color) and photofacial.
How does cooling make it safer?
Studies have shown that when the skin is cooled before, during and after the laser fires, it provides a superior level of comfort for the patient. The Elite MPX is equipped with the Zimmer Integrated Cooling System which minimizes the side effects and maximizes the client's comfort. During your treatment, your skin will have a continuous flow of chilled air the entire time in order to protect the tissues and provide you with exceptional comfort.
Can brown spots be treated with the Elite MPX laser?
Before brown spots are treated, they should first be evaluated and pre-screened for skin cancer and pre-cancerous cells by a licensed dermatologist. Once a dermatologist has determined that there aren't any underlying conditions, then we can proceed with removing the brown spots, thus dramatically improving the appearance of your skin. The Elite MPX Alexandrite laser targets brown spots, and it is known as being the gold standard laser for removing unwanted pigment from the skin. The laser can quickly and painlessly removes all types of benign, unwanted pigment including red spots and sun damage.
